October is Archeology month in Texas, and on October 5th Fort McKavett will host a walking tour of the Fort McKavett Cemetery at 2 p.m. and the Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society Star Party beginning at dusk. The fort's gates will remain open until 10:30 p.m.

All visitors are encouraged to arrive before dark to meet the astronomers. Amateur astronomers from the Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society in Houston will be on hand with their telescopes. There will be a wide variety of sizes and styles of telescopes that visitors can look through to see planets, nebulas, star clusters, and galaxies.

The star party is dependent upon weather and could be cancelled due to clouds or bad weather. On the afternoon of the Star Party, please feel free to contact the fort at 325.296.2358 for a status update. Please park in the parking lot and follow the red lights to the observation field. Bring a red flashlight. Red cellophane will be available to cover white light flashlights. Please no white light at the telescopes.
