Fort McKavett: Instruction, to a limited extent

November 10, 2018 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

In 1853, when Major W.G. Freeman passed through Fort McKavett during his inspection tour, he commented that drill and ceremony "instruction has been carried out only to a limited extent..." Due to the fort's construction, the soldiers of Fort McKavett did not impress this officer from Washington D.C. Even with a busy construction schedule, military drill was essential to a soldier's profession and practice carried on. Join us and the 8th US Infantry as we host volunteers and visitors to teach and perfect our soldier's drill. Reenactors will be able to stay in the original barracks and participate in several historical vignettes. The soldiers will travel into Menard on Saturday the 10th to participate in the Veterans Day Parade as well.
