Texas Forts Trail Region 50th Anniversary Caravan
Thursday, October 4 * Friday, October 5 * Saturday, October 6
Remember those road trips where your friends got together, gassed up the car and then hit the road? It wasn’t so much about the destination as it was the journey – right? The Texas Forts Trail is offering a three-day adventure combining a historic driving route with folklore, history, local cuisine, and trivia contests. Participants can join for just a few miles, a half day, full day or the entire journey! The Caravan begins and ends in Abilene, Texas, and will be held Thursday, October 4th through the afternoon of Saturday, October 6th.
When the Forts Trail was founded in 1968 by Governor John Connally and the Texas Highway Department (now TXDOT), the governor, his wife, and an entourage of state and regional officials drove the entire 650+ mile trail in two days time! In honor of the trail's 50th anniversary we'll be replicating that caravan drive over a three-day period in early October.
Today's participants can expect stops at eight historic forts and at the largest Spanish fort built in Texas! Each of these sites played crucial roles in the history of our great state - and nation. Along the way we'll enjoy local cuisine that will bring your taste buds to life! The caravan will have plenty of stops in quaint towns with lots of folklore. Drive time will be occupied with trivia games and I Spy, with prizes to be awarded at the end of the day.
There is no charge to participate in the Caravan. Registration is not required but deeply appreciated! Although everyone is responsible for their own lodging arrangements, special rates and room blocks have been secured. Reservations ARE required (and there is a cost) if you'd like to the partake of the pre-planned lunches and dinners. Many of the places we will be traveling through and/or stopping in are small rural communities or sites with very limited dining options. We strongly suggest making plans to be part of the group meals in order to share the experience with your fellow travelers and to guarantee getting an authentic local meal.
