Goldthwaite: Grand Opening of Botanical Gardens of Legacy Plaza in Goldthwaite

October 11, 2014 - 10:00am to 5:00pm

Located one block from downtown Goldthwaite and the Mills County Courthouse, Legacy Plaza will be a cultural and educational center that honors and celebrates early Native-American history and life and highlights their dependence on the region's native plants and waterways. When completed, the Plaza will consist of the Botanical Gardens, a Welcome Center, and the Native American Interpretive Center.

The Texas Botanical Gardens will be both a place of reflection and the hub of a thriving social center. The Gardens are a living museum that will feature native plant species used by the prehistoric peoples living in this region 10-12,000 years ago.

Rich history and stories about indigenous peoples living in this region of Texas abound. Archeologists have found these prehistoric peoples lived off the land by using a variety of plant life for food, clothing, shelter and medicine. We see much of this plant life every day and give little thought as to prehistoric uses or even why and how this plant life came to be here.
